Nephi would have understood the brief appearance of these twelve followers as expressing continuity with the twelve tribes of Israel. The association of the twelve with the tribes would have let Nephi know that they were important, even if their importance was not defined in the vision. Whether this part of the vision is intended to recall the twelve in Lehi’s first vision is not known. (See commentary accompanying 1 Nephi 1:10.)
