“He Went Forth Ministering Unto the People”

Brant Gardner

Nephi’s vision of salient aspects of the Atoning Messiah’s earthly ministry includes his rejection by many of the people of the world. Perhaps Nephi responded with particular sympathy and sorrow to this rejection, since he recorded this vision after experiencing his brothers’ dismissal of his religious message. Perhaps this part of the vision comforted him.

This interpretation also explains the portion of Lehi’s vision in which many would not come to the tree. The Messiah (the tree of life) offers the delicious and desirable fruit of the gospel, yet many simply refuse to partake of this free gift.
