It is clear that Nephi was talking to a person in this vision. Some have wondered if this might have been the pre-mortal spirit of the Savior. However, the Book of Mormon refers to the Spirit of God forty times and in nearly all instances it is made clear that he is referring to the third member of the Godhead, the Holy Ghost. Furthermore, Nephi is told that he is going to see a man descending from heaven and he is to bear record that it is the Son of God. This would seem to further suggest that Nephi is not talking to the Son of God but to the Holy Ghost, who bears witness of the Father and the Son.
