Nephis Vision on an Exceeding High Mountain

Daniel H. Ludlow

Although it is not absolutely clear exactly what happened to Nephi when he was "caught away in the Spirit of the Lord, yea, into an exceeding high mountain" (1 Nephi 11:1), other prophets have referred to their visions and heavenly manifestations in a similar manner. Ezekiel states that the Spirit "lifted" him up "between the earth and the heaven, and brought me in the visions of God to Jerusalem." (Ezekiel 8:3; see also Ezekiel 3:12-27 and 37:1.) Also, Moses was "caught up into an exceedingly high mountain" (Moses 1:1); the Savior was shown the glory of the world from the heights of a mountain (Matthew 4:8); Paul was caught up "to the third heaven" (2 Corinthians 12:2-4); and the apostle John was "in the Spirit" when he saw and heard the great visions he recorded in Revelation (Revelation 1:10).
