“Led by the Spirit, Not Knowing Beforehand”

Joseph F. McConkie, Robert L. Millet
The angel had recently explained to the sons of Lehi: “Behold ye shall go up to Jerusalem again, and the Lord will deliver Laban into your hands” (1 Nephi 3:29). Acting upon that imperative, Nephi made his way into the dark streets of Jerusalem, trusting his well-being to the Lord who had sent him. Nephi was directed, not by an angel, but rather by the quiet and certain gift of the Holy Ghost—the feeling and impression and voice for which he had sought and for which he was now qualified and entitled because of his faithfulness. Nephi was one who had treasured up continually the words of eternal life, and now in the very hour of need the divine direction was to be forthcoming (cf. D&C 84:85).
