Why does Nephi refer to Moses and the Exodus?

The influence of the Exodus is a major theme in the Book of Mormon, much as our pioneer heritage is a common theme to those in the restored Church. “The memory of Israel’s exodus from Egypt runs so deeply and clearly in the Book of Mormon that it has naturally drawn the attention of modern students” (Brown, “Exodus Pattern in the Book of Mormon,” 75).
