Sam was just a little older than Nephi and it must have been gratifying when Nephi gained the support of his older brother. We should mention in passing that Sam was not an abbreviation of Samuel but was actually the Egyptian name for Shem the oldest son of Noah. In Egypt, Sam was a very sacred name. Now Nephi decides to tell Laman and Lemuel that God has verified to him that this journey is a divine calling.
