“He Called the Name of the River Laman”

W. Cleon Skousen

Joseph Smith would not have known that desert people give different names to rivers and the valleys through which the rivers run. This is because desert rivers seldom last more than a few months and then they dry up. Joseph Smith would also not have known that desert people speak of valleys being firm and steadfast. In America these attributes are attributed to mountains. There are hundreds of evidences in the Book of Mormon that things were written by Joseph Smith in this wonderful text that he could not have possibly known from his own background and experience. Now we learn why Lehi named the river and the valley after his two eldest sons. There was a civil war brewing in this family.
