“I, Moroni, Will Not Deny the Christ”

Ed J. Pinegar, Richard J. Allen

Moroni, having completed the abridgement of the book of Ether, continues with his perilous existence, moving secretively among contending Lamanite factions. He knows that he will be killed if he is captured—unless he openly denies the Christ. This he refuses to do; therefore, he must avoid being discovered. Within this framework of threatened existence, he dwells on what he might do to add value to the lives of his anchorless Lamanite brethren. Therefore, he determines to add somewhat to the record he has already made by including choice and uplifting instructions on how to conduct the affairs of the kingdom according to universal covenant principles such as fervent prayer, priesthood callings and ordinations, and partaking worthily of the sacrament. We are fortunate that Moroni adds these additional insights to the Book of Mormon, priceless gems of wisdom that strengthen testimonies and build faith, including the famous promise that begins “And when ye shall receive these things …” (Moroni 10:4), concerning how the reader might confirm the veracity of the record through prayer and the confirming witness of the Holy Spirit.
