“Faith to Not Be Kept Within the Veil”

Monte S. Nyman

These four verses are an extension of the miracles precept, but tie back to the first precept example of Christ showing himself unto our fathers (v. 7 above). Not only did some see Christ, but they could not be kept within the veil and saw all things (v. 22). Moroni cites the example of the brother of Jared but says there were many others (v. 19). We know that Enoch, whose account was probably on the 24 plates (see Ether 1:2–3), was one of these (see Moses 1:21 ff). Abraham was another (see Abraham 3), and Moses was another (see Moses 1:31–41). Emer was another Jaredite who was not kept from within the veil (Ether 9:22), but may not have seen all that the above people saw. The prophet Ether was another such Jaredite, whom we will read about in the following chapter of this work. Moroni adds an additional general example of his fathers having seen that the Book of Mormon would come unto the Gentiles. As will be discussed below, Moroni was shown these same things. Another of his fathers who saw for himself was Nephi, son of Lehi; and John the Beloved could be added to the above list of those who saw within the veil (see 1 Nephi 14:18–26). Nephi was also told that others had seen these things and had written them and sealed them up, a reference to the Jaredites and possibly others.
