“Prophets Testified That a Great Curse Should Come Upon the Land”

Brant Gardner

Because the people are wicked enough to need prophets, the prophets warn of great calamities, including great loss of life, if they do not repent. The people ignore this warning message, and the curse falls upon them, significantly from both natural and human sources. The natural causes are famine (see also Ether 9:28–32) and pestilence, but this suffering is exacerbated by war.
