“He Refused and Would Not Be Their King”

Brant Gardner

The reluctance of Jared’s sons to assume the throne again parallels the reluctance of Mosiah’s sons (Mosiah 29:3). In Moroni’s understanding of history, repetition of the same pattern would not only be appropriate but a sign of its validity. A monarchy and its associated social hierarchy influenced the Nephite demise. Moroni would have seen the Jaredites as following the same course. While this information may have been clearly represented on Ether’s plates, Moroni may also have shaped its remarkable parallels to the Mosiah story that he obviously knew, possibly from the plates of Nephi, but more likely from reading his father’s record. The main difference between the two stories is that the Nephite inheritance crisis led to the dissolution of the monarchy and its replacement by judges. The Jaredite story is one of kings. While Moroni might be willing to enhance the parallels, he does not force a parallel that did not exist.
