“The Lamanites Did Give Unto Us the Land Northward”

Brant Gardner

Despite its success, the Nephite army could not have recovered all of its former territory, nor were the Lamanite/Gadiantons in complete disarray. The result was a treaty, communicating an indecisive military outcome. Rather than continue losing population through seesawing battles, both sides accepted a settlement. The Lamanite/Gadiantons obviously had a powerful hand in its terms since they “did give unto us the land northward… and we did give unto the Lamanites all the land southward.” This division was not, apparently, the traditional “southward” holdings of the Lamanites but their expansion into the southern portion of previous Nephite territory. The Nephites are now even more concentrated in the north.
