The infamous Gadiantons ominously appear. Mormon had previously defined the millennialistic period as the absence of Gadiantons. (See commentary accompanying 4 Nephi 1:15–18.) They presaged the destruction of the Nephites just before the Messiah’s arrival and therefore presage the destruction that Mormon will witness.
