“The Disciples Began from That Time Forth to Teach and to Baptize”

Brant Gardner

Mormon concludes his report of the Savior’s visit to Bountiful. From this point on, he provides information only on the Messiah’s appearance to the twelve, which occurred after an indeterminate passage of time. At the end of the intense three-day experience with the Atoning Messiah, the twelve began teaching the gospel, baptizing believers, and conferring on them the Holy Ghost. The three-day visit reprises the sets of three we have seen associated with this event, including the quaking of the earth for three hours and the three days of darkness. (See commentary accompanying 3 Nephi 8:19.) Perhaps that symbolic symmetry dictated the reason that Mormon recorded the timing of the three-day visit but left vague the timing of the subsequent visits to the twelve.
