On the first day, the Messiah had delivered to the Nephites the Sermon on the Mount that he had given to the Jews. It included assurances that he was fulfilling, not destroying the law of Moses (3 Ne. 12:17). The Nephites would have interpreted Jesus’s quotation of Malachi’s statement to remember the law of Moses in the light of their new understanding of its fulfillment.
