“An Exceedingly Great Number”

Brant Gardner

Notifying outlying relatives may well have taken the entire night, but even the “exceedingly great number” was necessarily limited by foot travel, distance, and darkness. Another city would have been too far away to go and return in a single night, even carrying torches to provide light. Also, they probably did not have kin in other cities and therefore probably would not have tried to make such contacts.
