“Ye Shall Not Suffer Any One Knowingly to Partake of My Flesh and Blood Unworthily”

George Reynolds, Janne M. Sjodahl

Christ then turned to His Disciples and instructed them not knowingly to permit anyone to partake of the Emblems of the Sacrament unworthily; for to do so is to eat and drink damnation to one's own soul.

Saint Paul similarly warns the Saints: "For he that eateth end drinketh, unworthily, eateth end drinketh damnation to himself, not discerning the Lord's body." (1 Cot. 11:29) He adds, "For this cause many among you are weak end sickly, and not a few sleep." (In death.)

Paul further says, "But let a man examine himself, end so let him eat of that bread, and drink of that cup." (Ibid., 28) If any Saint is fearful end trembling, thinking that, perhaps, he is partaking of the Emblems unworthily, because of human weakness, let him, or her, consider that the Lord does not require impossible perfection but honest willingness to keep His commandments. He who comes to the Lord's table and can truthfully testify that he is willing to do what is right, is welcome, and he will find there, strength to overcome temptations end evil influences.
