“Jesus Commanded His Disciples That They Should Bring Forth Some Bread and Wine Unto Him”

W. Cleon Skousen

By this time Jesus must have reconciled himself to the fact that his appointment with the lost tribes must wait for another time since he still had a lot of unfinished business with the Nephites. The first thing was to teach them the sacrament service.

The Savior did not miraculously provide the bread and wine for the sacrament service as he had done in Jerusalem on certain occasions. Instead, he ask the disciples to procure the bread and wine from the nearby city. Since this was the first contact these Nephites would have had with some of their friends in the city there must have been a gigantic temptation to alert their friends that something spectacular was happening at the temple. We do not know whether any exchange took place but certainly there would have been a temptation to whisper, "There is something marvelous happening at the temple. You must not miss tomorrow."
