The twelve’s written words are precursors to the gathering of Israel. It seems likely that the disciples anticipated this event; now they know it will occur in the future. While they will certainly have place in that gathering, it is not quite what they had hoped for. They may not have understood that only their record, not they as a people, would be part of the gathering.
