The Jews misunderstood because they supplied a more obvious (to them) referent (the Gentiles) than the Nephites, whom they did not know existed. The Gentiles did, in fact, become the focus of Christian preaching after Jesus’s death. However, Jesus explains that he did not preach personally to the Gentiles; therefore, they could not be the fulfillment of the promise to bring “other sheep” into the fold.
