“Therefore, Keep My Commandments”

Brant Gardner

The final statement in the New World presentation of Old World teachings echoes the final image of the Sermon on the Mount. The teachings have been presented; now it remains to us to live them. This explanation appears in a tight parallel:

I have given unto you the commandments.

Therefore, keep my commandments.

Reference: The final phrase echoes John 5:39: “Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me.” In John, the Savior was expressing mild derision of self-proclaimed experts in scripture who did not understand that those scriptures testified of Jesus as the Messiah. This New World echo of the phrasing expresses no derision. Jesus is straightforwardly explaining that what he has taught them is the fulfillment of the “law and the prophets,” meaning “the scriptures.” Thus, the Messiah is declaring that his gospel and mission fulfill scripture.
