“Take Therefore No Thought for the Morrow”

George Reynolds, Janne M. Sjodahl

These verses contain a brief version of the Savior's address to the Twelve. The Twelve are exhorted to remember what the Lord had spoken, for He says, "Ye are they whom I have chosen to minister to this people." They were His servants, His messengers. As such, they were to devote their whole time to the work of the ministry and to His interests. God, Who feeds the birds and clothes the lilies would also clothe them. "Take no thought of the morrow." This is not, as some have assumed, a general license to live a thoughtless life in idle waste of time; it is the assurance of the Master that God will provide His faithful servants with what they need if they will fulfill the mission to which He has called them, as He did when He sent the Twelve Apostles in Palestine on their mission. Immediately before His suffering in the Garden, He asked them, "When I sent you without purse, and scrip, and shoes, lacked ye anything?" And they answered, "Nothing."

Our Lord could, therefore say to the Twelve here, as to those on the occasion, "Take no thought for the morrow."
