The Savior now continues his talk in chapter 13:

Here again it is much easier to forgive trespasses when the offender at least says he is trying to repent. The Lord requires repentance by us before we are forgiven and it will be recalled that in Mosiah 26:31 the Lord says we should forgive when an enemy or trespasser says he is trying to repent. To me this is a very sensible, ethical and appealing way to apply the principle of forgiveness when one who has offended is trying to repent.
