“Whosoever Shall Smite Thee on Thy Right Cheek Turn to Him the Other Also”

George Reynolds, Janne M. Sjodahl

"It is written, an eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth." This is the formula for perfect justice. An eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth, but no more. This is far in advance of even modern ideas of retaliation that call for punishment "with a vengeance." But the ideal of our Lord is still higher: "Ye shall not resist evil, but whosoever shall smite thee on thy right cheek, turn to him the other also."

That non-resistance is a mighty force for good is shown in the history of the Christian Church during the first centuries, when it conquered the world by the "rod of its mouth and the breath of its lips." (Alma 24:6-27)
