“Whosoever Looketh on a Woman to Lust After Her, Hath Committed Adultery Already in His Heart”

George Reynolds, Janne M. Sjodahl

The view that adultery is only the actual transgression of the Seventh Commandment, when a married woman is concerned, our Lord corrects. The transgression begins in the heart. "Whosoever looketh on a woman"; that is, whosoever views one of the opposite sex for the deliberate purpose of awakening impure lusts, has "Committed adultery already in his heart." "It is better," he says, "that ye should deny yourselves of these things, wherein ye will take up your cross, than that ye should be cast into hell."
