“I Give Unto You a Commandment”

D. Kelly Ogden, Andrew C. Skinner

Specific examples are given of how the Savior came not to destroy but to fulfill. He did not do away with the old law, especially the basic commandments, but rather added higher laws. These examples illustrate a basic theme of the sermon: how to overcome the flesh—that is, how to learn to control the body. We came to earth not just to obtain a physical body but to learn to control it, to achieve self-mastery. The examples Jesus gave teach us that we must learn to control our emotions (especially anger), our sexual desires (any immoral thoughts and actions), our food intake (through fasting), and our tongue (our verbal communication).
