The Beatitudes

Ed J. Pinegar, Richard J. Allen

Blessed connotes a certain state of being—happiness. Happiness comes from keeping the commandments (see Mosiah 2:41). The Beatitudes include a commandment or virtue that, when lived, brings a blessing into his or her life. The Lord immediately blesses us as we keep the commandments, having eyes that see and hearts that feel (see Mosiah 2:24). Let us not fail to see the blessings of the Spirit in our lives as we keep the commandments (see Moroni 4:3; 5:2; D&C 20:77, 79). Let us remember that the commandments of God are about happiness—our happiness.

The Lord teaches us the celestial way of living as the way to live happily. The way to be happy is to give heed to the word, believe in Christ, and be baptized both by water and fire. In this way we come unto Him. Those who do so will be comforted in times of mourning. They will be meek, merciful, pure in heart, peacemakers, have the privilege of discipleship, even though they may be persecuted for His name’s sake and will hunger after righteousness. These are the things we should seek to do in order to enjoy happiness here and in the hereafter. We can pray for strength to live this kind of life.
