“I Give Unto You Power”

Brant Gardner

The restatement of the power to baptize is important in the risen Savior’s instructions because the context of baptism shifted from being a marker of integration into the believing community to the combination of entry into the believing community and acceptance of the cleansing available through the atonement. The abolition of animal sacrifices terminated the ability of the community to provide access to a communal atonement. It is replaced with the individual rite of baptism that personalizes the atonement.
