“Nephi Asks the Lord for Rain”

Monte S. Nyman

The people were compelled by the famine to be humble (vv. 7–8). We have no record of how and when the band of Gadianton was swept away (v. 10). Alma is convinced enough of their repentance to ask God to cause rain on the land and end the famine (vv. 11–13). Notice Nephi’s request for the Lord to give them another chance (v. 16). This seems to be a request for the people to “try again,” not the Lord. Nephi places a condition of the people serving God. Regardless, the Lord responds to Nephi’s request as the record continues.
