The Spirit has withdrawn from the Nephites because they abandoned gospel principles and adopted those of the world. Mormon’s editorial purpose requires the explicit statement as an explanation for the Nephites’ destruction. While they were righteous, Lehi’s foundational promise was operational; but now that they have broken the covenant, they are no longer under Yahweh’s protection and will be destroyed.
