The “cloud of darkness” could be the cloud of suspended particulates accompanying many volcanic eruptions. (See commentary accompanying 3 Nephi 8:20–22.) The Lamanites would be immobilized, not only because of fear but because they could not see where to go or whether other structures had fallen.
