“Words Which Helaman Taught to His Sons”

Brant Gardner

Redaction: Mormon formally ends the quoted sermon and returns to his own synopsis of the missionary journey. Mormon clearly saw Helaman’s charge to his sons as an essential introduction to Nephi and Lehi’s missionary journey because of its overall theme of remembrance. In calling their people to repentance, Nephi and Lehi are summoning them to remember and return to their forefathers’ covenant.

Geography: The Nephites’ new stronghold is the land of Bountiful, in which the city of Bountiful is the new seat of Nephite government. The brothers begin the missionary journey in the heartland, focusing first on the errant among their own people.
