“Attack The Great City Zarahemla”

Brant Gardner

Redaction: Mormon inserts information about the Nephites into the discussion of Tubaloth and Coriantumr. Because Zarahemla is Coriantumr’s target, Mormon prepares us ahead of time for the city’s capture. The internal contentions have weakened the city’s ability to resist and assault. What Mormon does not tell us here (though he does later, v. 26) is that the Nephites assumed the Lamanites would attack the periphery and distributed their forces to the outlying areas, assuming that there they would be on the front lines of a Lamanite attack. A strike at the capital was not something they were prepared for.
