“Love of Glory and the Vain Things of the World”

Brant Gardner

Redaction: This verse is difficult to parse without understanding the logic of Moroni’s accusation against Pahoran. Its essential elements are:

Can you suppose the Lord will spare you
when it is the Lamanite way that has caused this trouble?

Both phrases distill the essential information, but the second phrase is somehow supposed to show Pahoran the error of his ways. How does the Lamanite tradition mean that Yahweh cannot save Pahoran? The only possible answer is that Moroni is accusing Pahoran of imitating the Lamanite way. Now the accusation makes sense. Pahoran cannot hope for Yahweh’s deliverance while he is imitating Lamanite ways because it is those very ways that have caused this conflict.
