Two Thousand of Those Young Men—the Two Thousand Stripling Warriors

Ed J. Pinegar, Richard J. Allen

During the second quarter of the last century BC, Moroni, commander of the Nephite armies, and Helaman, son of Alma, are intensely occupied in defending their land from the violent incursions of the Lamanites. Around 64 BC, a particularly acute military situation requires reinforcements on the Nephite side. As we have seen, the people of Ammon—Lamanite converts who have been repatriated among the Nephites for safety—are anguished over the tribulations and afflictions of their hosts and are about to suspend their oath relinquishing forever the use of weapons of war. However, Helaman dissuades them, fearing that they will imperil their salvation. What can be done to assure victory in the urgent fight against the attacking Lamanites and their turncoat Nephite leaders? The answer comes in the spirit and courage of the sons of the people of Ammon. These young defenders of liberty have not taken the oath against the bearing of arms to protect their families. They step forward at a time of crisis to make their unforgettable mark on history.
