Other troops had different weapons, but the text indicates that they had different functions and locations. Squads of swordsmen guarded the locations where there was a greater likelihood of personal combat. Even these, however, had a protective force of slingers with them to harry the approaching soldiers before reaching the swordsmen.

The descriptions of the different fighting functions, types of weapons, and combination of weapons accurately depict how such weapons would have been used.
