Obviously Moroni's strategy was to make it impossible to attack any of the major Nephite cities except by an assault on the main entrance. But even the main entrance was a trap and Moroni had told Lehi and the commanders of the major cities to drop stones down on the heads of any who tried to attack the entrance to the city.
