“He Also Blessed the Earth for the Righteous’ Sake”

Brant Gardner

Alma then “blessed the earth for the righteous’ sake,” but it actually takes the form of conditional curse upon those “which do wickedly”—a curse that will operate to the benefit of the righteous. It may be that, after the revelation that his nation would ultimately be destroyed, Alma sought some confirmation that, while there would be a victory over the Nephites, there would not be a victory of evil over good. In this prophetic blessing, Alma promises that the wicked will not prevail. Thus, it becomes a blessing for the righteous in promising them ultimate salvation, if not the more immediate victory.
