“I Command You to Take It Upon You to Counsel with Your Elder Brothers”

D. Kelly Ogden, Andrew C. Skinner

Alma is in effect saying, Corianton, listen to your older brothers. Pay attention to their counsel. You’ve been a bad example! “When [the Zoramites] saw your conduct they would not believe in my words.” The Lord could say the same thing to any openly disobedient missionary. “I command you, my son, in the fear of God, … [to] refrain from your iniquities.” “Return unto [the people], and acknowledge your faults and that wrong which ye have done.” Confession—acknowledging and admitting our sins—is an indispensable part of true repentance; going through all the other steps but avoiding confession is not complete repentance and will not bring complete forgiveness.
