The original manuscript has the plural their lands, which Oliver Cowdery accidentally miscopied from 𝓞 into 𝓟 as a singular, their land. Elsewhere in the text, after wars and
battles, the people typically “return to their lands”:
- Alma 3:1
- and after they had finished burying their dead they all returned to their lands and to their houses and their wives and their children
- Alma 44:23
- and the armies of the Nephites or of Moroni returned and came to their houses and their lands
- 3 Nephi 6:1–2
- and now it came to pass that the people of the Nephites did all return to their own lands in the twenty and sixth year every man with his family his
flocks and his herds his horses and his cattle and all things whatsoever did belong unto them and it came to pass that they had not eaten up all their provisions therefore they did take with
them all that they had not devoured of all their grain of every kind and their gold and their silver and all their precious things and they did return to their own
lands and their possessions
In each of these cases, the text refers to people returning after war to what appears to be their individual plots of land that they farm.
