Like the good missionary that he was, Ammon undertook to ingratiate himself with the king. And the king liked him. In fact, he wanted Ammon to marry one of his daughters. Of course even in those days that would be against missionary rules so Ammon wiggled out of this embarrassing situation by offering to become one of the king's servants. We suspect the king wanted this big good-looking Nephite to be his son-in-law, but anyway he accepted Ammon's offer to be a servant and sent him to watch the flocks of the king.
