“They Were Men of a Sound Understanding”

D. Kelly Ogden, Andrew C. Skinner

After fourteen years, five friends met again, rejoicing that they were still faithful in the Lord. Then we have a ten-chapter account of the labors of the sons of Mosiah in what we might call the Southern Lamanite Mission. These verses describe how to be a great missionary, how to receive powerful personal revelation, how to teach with authority, and how to be filled with understanding: (1) search the scriptures diligently; (2) do a lot of praying and fasting; (3) be patient while suffering physical, mental, and emotional trials and afflictions; and (4) work hard, especially spiritually. Because the five missionaries did all these things, they became men of sound understanding, they had the spirit of prophecy and revelation, they taught with power and authority, they were good examples to the people, and they had success in bringing many souls to salvation.
