“Amulek: Thou Art a Holy Prophet of God and I Know That Thou Wilt Be a Blessing Unto Me and My House”

Ed J. Pinegar, Richard J. Allen

Amulek is prepared through a vision to receive Alma. He recognizes Alma as a prophet of God and serves alongside him as a second witness of the truth.

As the faithful missionary companion of Alma, Amulek shares in the tribulation often attending the errand of the Lord, but also harvests the blessings of joy that come with covenant obedience. When we think of Amulek, we remember the spiritual lessons he teaches with power and authority: that prayer is a potent force for good (“But it is by the prayers of the righteous that ye are spared”—Alma 10:23; compare Alma 34:17–28); that the Lord will not come to redeem the people “in their sins, but to redeem them from their sins” (Helaman 5:10; Alma 11:33–37); that we should follow the Spirit in all things (“For I shall say nothing which is contrary to the Spirit of the Lord”—Alma 11:22); that the Resurrection is a certainty (“And even there shall not so much as a hair of their heads be lost; but every thing shall be restored to its perfect frame”—Alma 11:44); and that the infinite Atonement is essential for the salvation of mankind: “And behold, this is the whole meaning of the law, every whit pointing to that great and last sacrifice; and that great and last sacrifice will be the Son of God, yea, infinite and eternal” (Alma 34:14).

In Amulek, as we shall see, we have an example of one who is willing to relinquish all of his worldly possessions “for the word of God” (Alma 15:16) and suffer rejection by his family when he takes up the ministry (Alma 15:16). Amulek continues to serve the Lord with complete loyalty and righteous commitment.
