“The Words Which Have Been Spoken by Our Fathers”

Brant Gardner

Rhetorical: Alma also bears testimony that "the words which have been spoken by our fathers are true." Alma probably also has a dual purpose in this declaration. In addition to simply bearing affirming testimony, Alma is reminding his people that as Nephites they have a particular tradition and that it is true. This tradition is centered on the atoning Messiah, and that is one of the first points of contention between the church and those outside of the church. Alma is very likely emphasizing the truth of the atoning Savior as a core belief that must be preserved.
