“The Cause of Much Affliction to Alma”

Brant Gardner

The markers of wealth in verse 6 signaled not just wealth but apostasy and division into social classes. Alma and other church officers clearly read these signs. The wealthy saw themselves as better than others who lacked the same worldly status symbols. Alma experienced “much affliction” because he could foresee the same dynamic that had resulted in the Amlicite apostasy and defection.
