“Nehor Began to Establish a Church After the Manner of His Preaching”

D. Kelly Ogden, Andrew C. Skinner

By setting himself up as a light to the people and establishing a church, or organization, that promotes himself, Nehor was guilty of priestcraft (2 Nephi 26:29). The general public supported him and gave him money. There are occasional modern examples of televangelists and large-crowd preachers who live a profligate lifestyle on the donations of their dedicated supporters. The Lord warns, “Trust no one to be your teacher nor your minister, except he be a man of God, walking in his ways and keeping his commandments” (Mosiah 23:14).
