As discussed under Mosiah 21:8, the original text had quite a few examples where a simple pasttense verb form was conjoined to a preceding predicate containing the past-tense auxiliary verb form did. In this particular instance, Joseph Smith emended the gave to give in his editing for the 1837 edition. The critical text will, of course, restore the original gave.
