Was Abinadi sentenced to be executed for believing God would become mortal? No. Doctrinal issues are almost always a cover-up for underlying issues. The real cause for which Noah and his priests wanted Abinadi put to death was that he was a threat to their power and influence; they were jealous and angry, not wanting to hear about their sins. Notice their demand to “recall all the words which thou hast spoken evil concerning me and my people.” It is the same with other prophets and with Jesus himself (compare, for example, 1 Kings 22:8; Matthew 14:3–4; 27:18).
