“God Will Not Suffer That I Shall Be Destroyed at This Time”

Brant Gardner

Abinadi has already told the priests that he cannot be captured until he finishes his message. Now he announces that he will finish it. Abinadi allows for the possibility that he may not survive this encounter with Noah. In a voice of prophetic warning, he assures them that they will reap in their personal lives whatever fate they inflict on him. He is holding out options to them. Yahweh left room for the exercise of agency and repentance, even to the last moment. If all had repented like Alma, then Abinadi would have been freed and the toppling of Noah’s regime (including his own death) might have been avoided. If Noah or any of the priests saw this option, however, they did not take it.
